Favorite Boys’ Books for Beginner Readers

There’s a small window of time between your child mastering the very beginner readers with a couple sentences per page and beginner chapter books. It can be a tricky time to find books that are just right for their level. And if you have a boy, this can be a particularly tricky phase.

What I’ve learned so far (with our two oldest boys) is nonfiction readers and books that are funny have kept them engaged the most!

3 FAVORITES MY BOYS HAVE LOVED:

STEP INTO READING READERS

Both my older boys have loved these during this stage. I love that there’s a wide variety of subjects to choose from. They’ve specifically loved the nonfiction readers, mainly the ones sports and history related. Two recent favorites of our first grader were the readers about Babe Ruth and George Washington.

Learning to navigate nonfiction text is a great skill to establish early on in their reading journey and one that I want to encourage.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC READERS

We love these books so much! The content and vocabulary keep their attention really well, and I love that they’re also building a love for nonfiction reading with these too.

I think we own a few in each level. And we always come home from the library with National Geographic books of some sort.

MERCY WATSON SERIES

If you’re looking for beginner chapter books or series for boys, the Mercy Watson series is a must. There are six books in the series. The books are beautifully illustrated, and the stories are funny! While there are LOTS of beginner book series out there, I’ve found that most of them don’t hold my boys’ attention as well as these.

There are also four books in the spin-off series, Tales from Deckawoo Drive, that they’ve loved just as much.
