Introducing: Homework

As he’s walking up the sidewalk from getting off the bus, with a big smile he says, “Mommy, I have homework.”

He doesn’t mess around. Put down backpack, wash hands, and then right to the table. I watch him matter of factly sharpen his pencil, get set in his seat, and with a determined look on his face, get to work.

Thomas still has a memory from his three year old mother’s morning out class where they gave a little sheet one time they could do as “homework.” He was excited about it then, and he’s still excited about it. Funny kid! Likely, this will not always be the case.

Since starting Kindergarten last year, we go through the same routine every afternoon. He immediately comes in the kitchen and starts emptying the contents of his take home folder displaying things he’s worked on and talking quickly about things I need to look at.

I tell Tom about Thomas coming in and getting right to work, and his response is always the same when it comes to things like this, “He did not get that from me.” (Tom tends to be more of a procrastinator.)

It’s a great gift to watch your children take on your strengths and weaknesses and watch them become their own individual selves.
