In six years of being a parent, this was the first birthday cake I have made myself. This is hard to believe since I enjoy cooking. Baking, though, is a different thing. But when I saw this recipe for a baby birthday cake, I thought it could happen. So the boys got in the kitchen and helped me make what turned out to be a really tasty and cute cake!
We took some pictures and sang Happy Birthday to him with his cake. We originally had him outside thinking it would be a mess once he got into the cake. After seeing that he wasn’t too interested in getting his hands in it, we made a smarter decision to bring him back inside to the highchair and cut him a small piece. He wasn’t sure what to make of it at first, but eventually he enjoyed it!!

He’s so close to walking. He can stand by himself without holding on to something for a few seconds. When he wants to make a move from there, he sits down and starts to crawl. He hasn’t quite figured how this walking thing works. But it’s just a matter of time.
The past few weeks have been rough on his schedule after being sick. So he’s woken up more during the night. This has been a habit for him more often than not during this first year. Starting out sleeping in a swing for his reflux for so long became a prop for him. We had a hard transition from that to the crib and generally he’s woken up more nights than not. I hope we’re on the path to better sleep from here on out!
He’s in the process of getting several more teeth and it’s made him ill lately. Once these make their way through, he will have all of his teeth minus the two year old molars. That’s pretty impressive for a just turned one year old. All of the boys have been this way, but he seems to have handled the discomfort harder than the others. This has played a partial role in our nighttime woes.
He’s doing really well with table food and a sippy cup. He prefers to have a larger piece of something to take small bites from than to pick up small pieces of food you cut up for him. He’s currently loving a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and cantaloupe!
He loves to play with balls. I’m pretty sure all of them have been the same way at this stage. He sits for a long time throwing them and chasing them in front of him. He’s partial to tennis balls and basketballs.
He loves his brothers and sits in the middle of anything they’re doing just wanting to be included. The weather has been beautiful the past week or so and he’s enjoyed getting dirty with them in the backyard. Spraying off with a water hose after playing in the dirt pile when it’s time to come in for the day isn’t uncommon here. And I’m certain he’s going to join them in full force this summer.
He says mama and dada. And he’s starting to babble a lot more. He enjoys clapping his hands and waving to us.
He’s recently started having some stranger anxiety. Last week we were out to dinner and our waiter spoke to him. After a few seconds of studying him and wondering, “who is this guy?” the tears started to flow. There have been several similar instances lately. He will be baptized tomorrow, and we’re anxious to see how he reacts!
He is 1! We are blessed beyond measure and thankful for this smiling baby to be a part of our lives.
