A few weeks ago we woke up on a Friday morning with a wonderful winter surprise. It snowed! Thomas had been out of school the day before with a mild fever and would also be staying home Friday as well. Tom and I woke up later than usual and were letting everyone sleep in since we didn’t have to do the early morning routine with Thomas.
Tom got up around 7:00 and shortly after woke me up saying, “It snowed. A lot.” Now, “a lot” depends on what you have to compare it to; and we think “a lot” is when most of the ground is covered in a couple inches of snow and the rooftops are white. And this happens oh so rarely here. When we woke up not expecting to see snow at all, we were VERY surprised!

There was a slight chance of snow to the south of us, but honestly we didn’t even give a thought to actually getting snow because if they predict it, they’re usually wrong. At times we get a wintery icy mix and that sends everyone into a fuss. So to wake up and see the ground covered in a blanket of snow was quite a treat and something that we rarely see here. Matter of fact, the last time we woke up to a pretty unexpected snowfall was Christmas Day seven years ago when I was pregnant with Thomas!
Christmas Morning 2010. A slightly younger version of ourselves with my brother and sister-in-law.
Naturally, all this excitement called for bundling up and enjoying this rare event. We ate breakfast and watched the snow continue to fall. It was so pretty. For a while the flakes were so big and fluffy. Tom headed into work late and then I got the boys and myself ready to go outside.
This is laughable to some degree. We have winter coats and hats but generally aren’t prepared for playing in snow. Each of the boys has waterproof gloves to go into their Christmas stockings en route to our house. I had ordered these for an upcoming trip in January, what I thought would be the only potential time we’d actually need them!

Once we were as warm as we were going to be, we headed out to play. There were snow angels made and snow ball fights. They loved just walking around exploring it. JL had actually never worn gloves before. His were a tad big and every few minutes he’d lose one and walk over to me to put it back on. He didn’t fuss one bit. He actually enjoyed just walking around and looking at the snow!

Collectively, this was their first snowfall to enjoy together. They loved it, and it was a special morning. By the end of the day it was mostly gone. While it wasn’t “a lot” in comparison to other places, they were so surprised and excited to wake up and see snow outside.
