Father’s Day Weekend 2017

Our weekend got off to a start on Friday night with some grocery shopping and we picked up pizza from one of our favorite pizza places.

Saturday was a fun and full day! We started the morning with Tom making pancakes and taking it slow for the rest of the morning. Tom wanted to spend some time with Arthur by himself so they ran an errand to a nearby butcher shop we’d been wanting to try.  They came home with some steaks for dinner and a pound of thick-cut bacon. The bacon was an impulse buy! We ended up cooking some of it with breakfast Sunday, and the boys said it was the best bacon they’d ever had. They’re not too hard to please.

While they were gone, Thomas and I played with JL and prepped the potatoes and a few things for dinner.

After lunch Tom took Thomas to a birthday party. One of his friends from his class this past year is also the son of a couple we’ve known since college. It’s sweet that they’ve become buddies. And Thomas enjoyed getting to see some of his school friends that were invited too.

When they made it back home, Tom left to play tennis. While the boys were resting, I started getting things ready for the boys to make dessert for Tom. One of the things Arthur said he wanted to do this summer was make an apple pie. Not sure where he got the idea, but I told him we would try to make it for Father’s Day. A pie from scratch wasn’t just a first for them, but me as well. This had always seemed intimidating to me in the past. I found a recipe for dough and a filling and to make things easier I got the filling and dough made so when Arthur woke up from his nap all we had to do was assemble the pie.

I think that was a smart plan. While they loved helping with the dough, we had quite a mess to clean up afterwards. I have to say the pie turned out excellent though. It was so rewarding for them to see how well it turned out. In keeping with the spirit of baking, they both went to their closet and pulled out their chef dress up costumes to have the full effect. I love how they love to dress up at these ages!

Late in the afternoon we relaxed and played in the yard.

Tom got to work on the steaks and we put together a new mashed potato recipe. I had plans to make a salad, but with all the other stuff we had going on, I didn’t get to it. We didn’t intend to have such a manly meal, but in the spirit of Father’s Day, it was perfect…steak, potatoes, apple pie, and ice cream! There were no complaints! After we got everyone to bed, we had a kitchen to clean. We joked that when you have no more spoons and forks at the end of the day, that means you’ve had a pretty full day!

We wrapped up the night very thankful for this man we get to share this life with. God has given him a heart that enables him to be a loving father and husband and we’re very blessed.

Sunday morning was church. And after lunch, Tom played tennis again! Super rare for that to happen and in the spirit of Father’s Day I didn’t complain too much! He’s preparing for a tennis tournament next weekend. He’s always thoughtful to try to play during naptime so he’s not missing too much time with the boys.

In the evening we made the drive over to visit with Tom’s parents and siblings and celebrated Father’s Day with them. The cousins had a lot of fun playing together as always. I snapped this picture of Arthur playing the piano. For the most part, the other kids just bang on the keys at the same time and it gets very loud! This was one of the first times I had seen Arthur sit down and play all by himself. He was playing so gently and so well, Thomas actually said he thought it was Grammy playing! Maybe he has the musical gene! It’s sprinkled all around on both sides of Tom’s family. As much as I would love to be musically inclined, that’s not a gift of mine.
