Preparing for a new school year

We’re within a week of a new school year starting and whether we’re ready or not, it’s coming. The most important things we’ve done in the last week and a half have been getting our nighttime routine reestablished and starting to move our wake time up along with Thomas’s.

There’s a whole lot that goes on from 6:00 until we get everyone in bed and this summer we’ve been enjoying having a laid back routine. One of the things we wanted to accomplish this summer was for Thomas to be able to shower by himself before school began this year. He’s doing a great job and almost ready to handle it solo. Right now we get the kitchen cleaned up after dinner and then Thomas heads to the shower while I bathe Arthur and JL. Once Thomas masters this step of independence, I think it will take some time off our routine a little bit.

The other element that’s even more crucial is our morning routine. Not one person in this household is a naturally early and energetic riser. All of our kids have all slept until 8:00 am once they began sleeping through the night, and if we don’t wake them, that’s about when they naturally wake up. JL was a little late to join said routine but he’s finally on board! With that said, it has been glorious this entire summer to catch up on sleep that I’ve missed for about a year. We’ve taken it easy and had lazy days and I’ve slept until they come to cuddle in my bed. To be honest, I’m not ready for it to end.

So after a summer with no alarm clock, this past week it’s been necessary for Tom and I to start setting our alarms again a little earlier and waking Thomas a little earlier every few days. I have a love/hate relationship with the snooze button. For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved to press that blessed button multiple times before actually waking. This makes no sense, I know. Tom always says if I’d be realistic about what time I actually need to get up and just set it to allow myself to snooze once or twice I’d actually get more sleep. I know he’s right. I haven’t mastered it just yet! We’ve got a lot of work to do in the next week! But I know adjusting it back in increments will be much better on all of us that just a sudden super early morning on the first day of school. Thankfully, Arthur and JL will sleep until their normal times.

This week we’ve been completing some last minute errands and getting things ready for next week. The boys got much needed haircuts.

We spent way too much time looking for new tennis shoes for Thomas but finally found a pair that work. I do most shopping online. Once I find things that work for the boys, I tend to stick to the same things season after season until there’s a need to change. We’ve recently hit a new milestone and at 6 years old have graduated to big boy sized shoes that mostly only come in lace up. These boys tend to take after their dad with big, narrow feet. I have a feeling this is just one of many wardrobe issues we may face as they grow.

And afterwards got in a little golf…

As we wrap up the week, I’ll be getting out Thomas’s backpack and lunch box and checking to make sure we have all the supplies we need for school lunches. Thankfully, our school uses the EduKit program so all of his school supplies will be lovingly waiting on him in his new classroom.

These utensils are a favorite of ours and usually through the year some don’t make it home or a spoon or fork may accidentally find its way to the garbage at home. I will be adding a few more sets of these to the lunch arsenal.

And these food storage containers have been a favorite for a few years now.

And now we eagerly await the postcard in the mail to find out who his teacher will be!
