The weekend + prepping for a solo week

Friday morning Thomas and Arthur had a checkup at the dentist. Thankfully, they don’t have any fear of having their teeth cleaned so far. JL did pretty well staying content, although we had to make a few loops around the hall. As usual he thinks he should be doing whatever his big brothers are doing so he was constantly trying to hop into the dentist chair with them. I ended up having to hold him sitting on the end of the chair and he was perfectly content to feel he was part of the action.

After the dentist Thomas went to have lunch and play at a friend’s house. We weren’t even completely out of their driveway before Arthur started crying. He adores Thomas so much. We’re so thankful for how well they play together and love each other. But it’s important for both of them to have some time apart sometimes too. This gave me a bit of sadness because I’m sure the beginning of school is going to be an adjustment for him (and all of us for that matter) once again when Thomas is away for most of the day. The beauty for him, that he can’t see yet, is JL is fast approaching being able to do far more with them than before, which will make it easier for Arthur.

Friday night was pizza, salad, and fruit at home. We had plans to walk up to the playground in the neighborhood after dinner. But the weather got bad right as we were finishing dinner so we settled for a game of Old Maid. We’ve been getting these pop up storms early in the evenings the past few days – mostly wind and thunder with a little rain. It’s been enough to make Thomas a little unsettled every time. A few months ago during a bad storm lightning struck a pine tree in our side yard. It was extremely loud and unsettling for all of us. We’ve never had any of them be afraid of bad weather. But since then Thomas has become anxious over it.

Saturday morning after breakfast Tom took Thomas and Arthur to a birthday party. Some of our very best friends have two girls whose birthdays are a week or so apart and they always do a joint party. They had fun playing with friends while JL and I made a trip to the gym and ran a few errands. Normally we would have all gone to the party together. But this week Tom will be out of town for work. So I wanted to get in one extra workout since I’m not entirely sure what the agenda will look like for us during the week. Plus, I wanted to take care of two errands that were easier to tackle with one kiddo in tow instead of three!!

In the afternoon we enjoyed some rest time and smoothies for snacks while Tom played tennis for a little while.

Our tomatoes are starting to produce and they boys are loving checking every day to see if there are any new ones. We’ve been so impressed and happy with the way these varieties have turned out this year.

The evening brought yet another storm. Tom grilled our favorite burgers and we spent the night hanging inside out of the rain.  After we got the boys to bed, Tom headed out for a bit to have a guys’ night. We both trade out and do this form time to time. The beauty of having so many good friends live so close makes being able to meet and hang out with friends for a little while very convenient.

Sunday morning was church followed by grocery shopping. In the afternoon we helped Tom start packing and the boys spent a lot of time playing and getting in some time with dad before he leaves for a few days.

The ice cream truck also made an appearance on our street when we were outside playing, and it was a huge hit with the boys and their friends!

This weekend we worked on meal prepping even more than usual. Tom will be away from us for work most of the week, home for one day, then pack to leave again for a tennis tournament out of town next weekend. This is very unusual for us, and I always dread when he’s not part of the daily routine. We work so much better together. If having some food prepared for a normal week is helpful, it’s extremely necessary when I’m by myself or vice versa.

A few things I worked on to have for the week…

Pasta for lunch

Oatmeal squares

Oatmeal cups

Granola

Browning meat for our favorite spaghetti sauce

That’s a good start. I’m sure breakfast will appear once, maybe twice, on the menu and maybe a night of takeout to make things easier!
