We have a deep love for Christmas books and have been adding Christmas picture books to our collection for years. Over the past few years as the older boys have graduated to chapter books, it’s opened up a new area of Christmas books to explore!

CHRISTMAS IN COOPERSTOWN My older boys have enjoyed the Ballpark Mystery series over the last years. These are perfect for those just diving into chapter books. Shorter chapters and plenty of black and white pictures. And what’s better than reading a favorite mystery series set during the Christmas season?

THE CHRISTMAS GENIE We’re big fans of Dan Gutman! The boys especially love his Baseball Card Adventure Series. A genie lands in the 5th grade class on the last day before Christmas break granting the class only one wish.

THE CHRISTMAS PIG I’ve had my eye on this new release from J.K. Rowling for a while. Our library doesn’t have it yet. When I saw it was makred to half with an additional coupon, I didn’t hesitate to grab it! My oldest read this one first. Then I read it myself last Christmas season. I think maybe this year all the boys are old enough to read through it together.

A BOY CALLED CHRISTMAS The first book of three in the Christmas trilogy by Matt Haig. This is another one our oldest read first. And then we all watched the Netflix movie. It’s really great! I read the book after we watched the movie. And I think it was a great book to movie adaptation was really good. THE GIRL WHO SAVED CHRISTMAS, and FATHER CHRISTMAS AND ME, are also in this series.

THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER We read this Christmas classic out loud to the oldest three boys a couple Christmas seasons ago and there was no shortage of laughter reading about the Herdman siblings who show up to the church for free snacks and take over the Christmas pageant. I will say I had to improvise on a few parts for the sake of the youngest two, then 4 and 6.

THE LAST HOLIDAY CONCERT The oldest boys are also big fans of Andrew Clements. He’s a great writer of school stories, Frindle and No Talking being two of their favorites. When Hart Evans’ rubber band hits the teacher, it’s the last straw. After already having enough, the Mr. Meinert tells the students he’s leaving the annual holiday concert in their hands.
